The 5x5x5 Penrose Axis Cube started with a simple question: how could I transform a regular 5x5x5 cube into something that looked completely different without replacing its basic mechanism?
I decided to experiment with 3D-printed extension pieces. By carefully designing and adding these extensions to a 5x5x5 cube, I was able to transform its familiar cubic appearance into a distinctive Penrose-inspired shape.
The real challenge was making the extensions work with the existing puzzle mechanism. The added geometry had to be carefully designed so that the pieces could move correctly while maintaining the axis mechanism. It was fascinating to see how adding relatively small extensions could completely change the character of the original cube.
The result became the 5x5x5 Penrose Axis Cube, a mod puzzle that combines a familiar 5x5x5 mechanism with an unusual geometric form.
For me, this puzzle demonstrates what I love about 3D-printed extensions: they give me the freedom to take an existing puzzle and transform it into something that would otherwise be difficult to create.
