The Book

One Turn at a Time

How a Rubik’s Cube at 45 changed everything — an autobiography by Manish Rathod, published 2026.

Book - One Turn at A Time

In July 2017, at forty-five, Manish Rathod bought a Rubik’s Cube for less than four hundred rupees at a Mumbai airport bookshop, on impulse, while waiting out a delayed flight. One Turn at a Time is his own account of what happened next: twenty-three years into a career in media sales, he taught himself to solve it, then taught himself CAD, bought a 3D printer, and became the designer behind more than 150 twisty puzzle designs and counting, 99 of them listed in the official Twisty Puzzle Museum.

It’s a book about starting something new in midlife, not as a crisis but as a choice, told in his own words, in paperback and on Kindle.

What Readers Are Saying

My friend Manish is a Late Bloomer. His puzzle journey/story starts at age 45 and he’s become obsessed about twisty puzzles. This tale is especially good for anybody middle aged who is in a rut! Find a new passion and pursue it with gusto.

I loved reading this book as a cube enthusiast. I identified strongly with the different stages described in the world of cubes. Recommended to cubers and non-cubers alike.

A very rare real story that constantly reminded me of the proverb “where there’s a will, there’s a way”… What a matter of pride for our country India, that Manish Rathod’s puzzles, invented and brought to life in his home in Ahmedabad, are now being sold globally. If you want to do something, and firmly believe you can, read the book One Turn At A Time.

An inspiring story that demonstrates that, with effort, curiosity and passion, any time is a good time to learn and take up any discipline, if that is what one truly desires. Also when one is unaware of that desire, or when that activity arises in the most casual way. What Manish shares with us is not just a story by and for cube enthusiasts, but one about how to face life when daily obligations keep us from seeing beyond the immediate.
