The Cuboctahedron Ghost Minx started with an idea to transform one of the most recognizable dodecahedral puzzles into something completely different. I wanted to take a regular Megaminx and see if I could change its geometry into a cuboctahedron.

To make this possible, I designed and added 3D-printed extension pieces to the original Megaminx. The extensions completely changed the outer geometry while allowing me to retain the underlying puzzle mechanism. Seeing the familiar Megaminx slowly transform into a cuboctahedron was one of the most interesting parts of the project.

But I wanted more than just a shape modification. I wanted to make the solving experience genuinely challenging, so I decided to ghost three layers of the puzzle. With the ghosted layers, the usual visual references disappear, making it much harder to recognize pieces and understand their orientation.

The result is the Cuboctahedron Ghost Minx—a 3D-printed shape mod that combines Megaminx mechanics, cuboctahedral geometry, and three ghosted layers.

For me, this puzzle shows how far a familiar mechanism can be transformed when geometry and imagination come together.
