The 2×2 Rhomo Ghost Cube began with a simple idea: how far could I transform a regular 2x2x2 cube using 3D-printed extension pieces?
I wanted to move away from the traditional cube shape and transform the puzzle into a Trapezo – rhombic dodecahedron, or Rhomo, while keeping the original 2x2x2 cube as the foundation. I designed and added 3D-printed extension pieces around the original puzzle to create the new geometric form.
But I didn’t want it to be only a shape modification. I also wanted to make the puzzle visually confusing and more challenging to solve, so I incorporated a ghosted layer into the design. Without the familiar colors and visual references of a normal cube, the changing shapes and piece orientations become much more important.
The result is the 2×2 Rhomo Ghost Cube—a combination of a regular 2x2x2 mechanism, 3D-printed extensions, rhombic dodecahedron geometry, and ghost-puzzle characteristics.
I enjoy designs like this because 3D printing allows me to experiment freely. A simple 2x2x2 cube can become something completely unexpected with the right combination of geometry and imagination.
