The Hexagonal Ghost Skewb started as an experiment with a regular Skewb. I wanted to see what would happen if I combined a 3D-printed extension, a ghosted layer, and a completely different hexagonal shape.
Once I started working on the design, I realized that changing the shape made the familiar Skewb mechanism surprisingly confusing. The ghosted layer removes the usual visual clues, while the hexagonal extension makes it much harder to recognize the pieces and their orientation.
In fact, the puzzle became so challenging that it even surprised me. While recording a display video of the Hexagonal Ghost Skewb for my YouTube channel, I accidentally scrambled it. When I looked at the puzzle, I realized I couldn’t immediately figure out how to restore it!
It took me around 15 minutes to solve my own puzzle. That moment actually became a great test of the design. If a puzzle can confuse its own creator, I knew I had created something genuinely challenging.
For me, the Hexagonal Ghost Skewb is a fun example of how changing the shape of a familiar mechanism can completely transform the solving experience.
