One day, while thinking about the geometry of a sphere, I suddenly had an unusual idea: what if I made a puzzle from just one-eighth of a sphere—a spherical octant?
I wanted to see whether this shape could work as a twisty puzzle, so I chose the Curvy Copter as the foundation. From there, I started developing what became the Spherical Octant Copter.
The geometry turned out to be much more complicated than I initially expected. Unlike a regular Curvy Copter cube, this puzzle has only four main sides. One side follows a spherical surface, while the other three sides retain the characteristic geometry of a Curvy Copter cube. Bringing these very different surfaces together into a functional mechanism was a fascinating design challenge.
The final result has an unusual elegance. Its spherical surface gives it a distinctive appearance, while the Curvy Copter geometry makes it genuinely challenging to solve.
For me, the Spherical Octant Copter is a perfect example of how a simple geometric thought can evolve into an unexpected puzzle.
